I'm glad you liked the review. I'm trying to get better at analyzing the visuals of movies. Could just...Hmm, hard to say if Wise is the reason. Could just as easily be the script. It is very striking to have a black main character in a '50s film who's young, attractive, and yet fairly complicated morally. Are we meant to see him as a good person who's just snapped from years of injustice and hatred, as a weak criminal who's little better than his fellows, or as both together? The script and Wise's direction of it gives sympathy to the characters while leaving a lot of questions for the audience.Aubynhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00446079492480611898noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3193750673421600279.post-48223421762263564952014-05-30T20:02:23.874-07:002014-05-30T20:02:23.874-07:00I agree with the others, this is a great post! I've never seen this, but it does sound fascinating. I wonder if maybe you felt Belafonte's character's anger wasn't explained enough because Wise didn't think too much explanation was needed.Kimberly J.M. I do find it interesting that one of the side effects of auteur theory is that certain directors get sidelined for being too good at leaving their own egos/interests at the door.Aubynhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00446079492480611898noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3193750673421600279.post-87710884005666454572014-05-29T04:32:12.467-07:002014-05-29T04:32:12.467-07:00Magnificent post, I really enjoyed it. You probe many levels here, and, apart from the intelligent analysis of the film, I thought this most interesting: "I think one of the reasons Wise never quite achieves critical darling status is that he was one of the most chameleon-like of directors, subsuming himself to the demands of his story."

Thanks for a great post.Jacqueline T. I really have been wanting to let loose my Robert Wise thoughts for a while now. And as for Grahame, I felt such a bittersweet pang watching her and Ryan in this film. Grahame really could take the archetypal tramp and make her enigmatic, sexy, complicated, and even tragic. She was unique. You certainly sold me on finding this one from the get go but especially after this "The performances in Odds Against Tomorrow are uniformly excellent, from the trio of inexperienced thieves to the unhappy women that love them, but what really knocked me out in Odds Against Tomorrow was the visual style."

Like Cliff, I really enjoyed your tribute to Grahame and it's obvious you spent a lot of time letting us in on why you chose this film for the Blogathon.
