The Ford version comes off like more of a loner, and I was surprised by how interested I was in a court case that was mostly fictional. Fonda is the main reason; he was born to play this type of part. The contemporary reviews of this film tend to throw around words like "Americana" and "nostalgic" a lot, but for my money, it's far less sentimental than it's given credit for. Granted, the portrayal of Lincoln is idealized but they still manage to give him multiple facets. And yes, the fact that Ford made this film and the gorgeous Technicolor Drums Along the Mohawk and, of course, Stagecoach all in the same year is nothing short of astounding.Aubynhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00446079492480611898noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3193750673421600279.post-84560391493068831912014-07-19T10:40:19.233-07:002014-07-19T10:40:19.233-07:00I liked your description of Lincoln as "calml...I liked your description of Lincoln as "calmly manipulating" others. That's a very good way of putting it!

This is another extraordinary John Ford film (flaws notwithstanding) with a brilliant cast. Henry Fonda is almost mesmerizing in this role, isn't he?Silver Screeningshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04955048716754142299noreply@blogger.com
