Farewell, Luise Rainer

When you lose your curiosity, you’re dead. There is so much in the world that one should know, or it would be marvelous to know. And I know nothing. Nothing! My God, one’s life-span is so very short.

Luise Rainer (1910-2014)

  1. Sigh. I can't help but think if Ms Rainer (in her Hollywood days) ever imagined she would live until the year 2014, outliving Shirley Temple and Mickey Rooney.

  2. I've never been able to get past the bizarre Muni-in-yellowface enough to appreciate the film version of The Good Earth but she was terrific in it and deserved her award, and her work in The Emperor's Candlesticks akways made me think that she could have had a great run as a comedienne, as well. Perhaps one of the least-luckiest career stories of the studio era, I'm sorry that the never got more of a chance to show what she might have done.

But she seems to have lived a very full life. Short? Not hardly. Sleep well, Luise.
